Blog :: Can't Sleep

I can't sleep. I'm preaching at Waterford COB this morning and I haven't spent as much time as I need in preparation. Yesterday was my daughter's first birthday which we celebrated with her grandparents and aunts and uncles here at our house! Great fun - but sometimes I just need blocks of uninterrupted thinking time to write and there weren't many of those available yesterday. So... 2AM insomnia has motivated me to leave my bed and spend time with Paul by way of Richard Hays.

While I've been writing I've been listening to music through my headphones. I've been meaning to write about Andrew Peterson for some time. This is obviously not that time, but I have to say that the depth and substance of his lyrics compared to most CCM is even more apparent in the wee hours of the AM... Inspiration. To borrow from another musician: Torah food for my brain let it rain till I drown / Thunder! / Let the blessings come down...

Update: Here's the sermon I delivered (more or less) this morning. Most of the discussion of Paul's message in I Corinthians is pulled directly from Richard Hays' excellent commentary. The application to the question of what to do about being Brethren is my own of course.

Update: My wife tells me that maybe Andrew Peterson sounds good that early for a reason. The liner notes to his Love and Thunder album give the time, date, and location for the composition to many of his songs. I see 3:14 AM, 3:37 AM, 5:38 AM, etc. Maybe I need to be getting up earlier. Oh and also to clarify any confusion: the song lyric I quoted above is from Matisyahu. If you've been looking for some Hasidic Reggae, Matisyahu is your man. Hat tip to 21stcenturyreformation... I'm working through his list...
